When addiction touches your life, it can be devastating. The stress it puts on everyone’s lives can sometimes be too much to handle. Addiction is a family disease. However, there are little things you can do to cope with some of these stresses.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is how to designate at least one hour a day to self-care. Self-care can be anything from putting on comfy clothes and watching your favorite TV show, to working out, to going on a walk to catch some rare Pokemon on PokemonGo. Self-care is any sober activity that is completely about making YOU feel better.

Whether you are dealing with your own addiction, or someone you love is struggling with addiction, taking care of your own mental health is imperative for a flourishing recovery.

Websites such as The Self-Compassion Project provide resources and examples for anyone in need of some self-care inspiration, and below are some self-care examples that anyone can do. I took it from The Self-Compassion Project, so if you would like more exercises similar to this, check out the website!

  • Take yourself out to eat your favorite food.
  • Get your body moving! Bike, swim, run, walk, exercise
  • Laugh! Watch a funny movie, talk with a friend that makes you giggle.
  • Have a good cry.
  • Take a hot shower, incorporate some yummy smelling soaps or body washes and just focus on you.

One of my favorite self-care activities is dressing up the way I feel. Whether it is in baggy sweats or a cute dress with my hair curled, making myself feel good in the skin I’m in has always been helpful. I would love to hear what others use for self-care and I’m hoping we can create a productive dialogue about how we all reduce stress and make ourselves feel safe and loved.

So how do you self care?
