Walgreens has emerged a champion for fighting against the nation’s opiate epidemic. From providing Narcan over-the-counter, to now installing kiosks for safe drug disposal, this company is making a huge impact.
Safe drug-disposal is essential in making sure medications are only taken by the individual they are prescribed for. It also prevents trace amount of prescription drugs to be dissolved into the water supply by disposing of these drugs in the correct way.
Many people, myself included, may find that they have held on to prescriptions from months, even years ago and do not quite know what to do with them. Unfortunately, this opens the door for the drug to be taken by loved ones or anyone else who did not have the drug initially prescribed for them. This is illegal and incredibly dangerous.
Unfortunately, a lot of young people’s first experiences with narcotics involve medicines they found in their parent’s cabinets. Medications such as opiate painkillers, benzodiazepines and/or amphetamines such as Adderall, all have a high potential for abuse. It is critical if you have access to these medications, to keep them in a safe space and dispose of them appropriately and safely if you do not plan on finishing your prescription.
According to an article by the Chicago Tribune, these kiosks are currently available in more than 300 stores in 24 states and are available during regular pharmacy hours at no cost.
